America is..sort of protesting the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
..to what end?
Prior to the February 4th opening ceremonies, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Australia, Lithuania, Kosovo, Belgium, Denmark and Estonia decided to diplomatically boycott the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Austria, Slovenia, Sweden and the Netherlands are not sending government representatives due to COVID issues, yet are sending athletes. The only two nations not sending athletes are North Korea, due to a suspension incurred for not attending the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and New Zealand, who stated they are not sending athletes or government representatives due to COVID and other concerns.

The games are every 4 years and missing an Olympics is a significant lost opportunity for those who have only so many years to compete. The White House claims they did not want to punish U.S. athletes by holding a complete boycott. And as the White House encourages American Olympic athletes to freely express themselves, despite House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s concerns about athletes’ safety, what would our government do if China actually followed through on its warning to all athletes to not stage any protests that violate Olympic rules or Chinese law?
